Tom Wall

What’s something you’re passionate about?

Data visualization.

What are you working on when you’re here?

I am bootstrapping a data visualization startup called Graphla.com.

What have you learned in the past week and what would you like to learn in the next week?

I have been learning a lot more about visualizing geographic data and using mapping API’s, for example the Google mapping API to visualize geocoded data.

I’ve slated more mapping for the next couple of weeks to work on. There are some other open source tools for doing mapping visualizations that I’d like to learn more about.

What’s a memorable or valuable experience you’ve had at Collective Agency, and why?

There have been a lot. The Christmas Party — it was definitely just socializing, meeting the other people at the Collective and talking about what they’re working on. Also the Lightning Talks have been really fun — it was my first demo of the software I’ve been working on.

Why do you work at Collective Agency?

Several reasons. I don’t work from home very well. I’m only good for about two hours from a coffee shop. Collective provides an office environment that’s very conducive to working but it’s not formal. And then also, the energy in a co-working place — being around other people that are working, even though they’re not your co-workers, there’s an energy in a room of people working that I find useful to feed off of.

What’s something you love about the neighborhood?

I like being able to bike in. I really love, in general, NW. I like how there’s Forest Park within walking distance of where I live, but then I can walk downtown. There are these two extremes of nature and city life, and they’re both within walking distance.

What question would you like me to ask you, and what’s your answer?

Favorite place to eat? My favorite place to eat around here, I  really like the Whole Bowl.
